What to look for
For espresso: 0.1g precision is non-negotiable — 1g of coffee grounds changes extraction significantly. Bluetooth/timer is nice but not essential. For pour over: built-in timer and 0.1g precision. For general brewing: any 0.1g kitchen scale works.
Frequently asked
What coffee ratio should I use?
Espresso: 1:2 (18g coffee : 36g shot, 25-30 seconds). Pour over (V60, Chemex): 1:15 to 1:17 (60g coffee : 1,000ml water for a full Chemex). AeroPress: 1:6 to 1:12 depending on strength preference. These are starting points — adjust to taste.
Does a more expensive scale make better coffee?
Not directly. A £10 kitchen scale accurate to 1g gives you maybe 85% of the precision of a £150 Acaia. The improvements from the premium scale are in consistency, flow-rate measurement (espresso only) and ergonomics. A good grinder impacts flavour far more than the scale.
