Length
5m suits most home DIY. 8m is the trade standard. Anything longer (25m+) needs a different tape type entirely.
Blade width
Wider blades (13mm+) stand out further before bending — important when measuring across gaps without a helper.
Lock mechanism
Auto-lock holds the blade out automatically; thumb-lock requires holding it. Auto-lock is faster but slightly more wear on internals.
Imperial or metric
Dual-scale tapes show both inches and cm. Useful for working from US plans or older UK projects in imperial.
Hook
The end hook should be loosely riveted to compensate for its own thickness — a fixed hook makes outside vs inside measurements inconsistent by 1mm.
What to look for
Blade width determines standout: 25mm blade extends about 1.5m unsupported; 32mm extends 3m+. For DIY: a 5m tape with metric and imperial markings. For professional trades: 8-10m with a 32mm blade. For body and sewing: a flexible fibreglass tape, not a steel one.
Frequently asked
Why does my tape measure have two measurements at the end?
The hook at the end of a tape is slightly loose by design — it moves exactly 1mm to compensate for inside vs outside measurements. When measuring inside a frame, the hook is pushed in 1mm; when hooking over an edge, it's pulled out 1mm. This gives accurate readings both ways.
What's the difference between UK and US tape measure markings?
UK tapes show metric (cm/mm) prominently on the top edge and imperial (inches) on the bottom. US tapes show imperial on top. Fractions of inches (⅛, ¼, ½) are marked differently between brands. Always check which side faces you when reading.
