How to use the Average Calculator
1
Three types of average
Arithmetic mean — add all values and divide by count. This is what most people mean by "average". Geometric mean — multiply all values then take the nth root. Used for percentage growth rates and investment returns. Weighted average — values that matter more get higher weights, like grade calculations with different credit weightings.

When to use each
Use arithmetic mean for test scores, temperatures, prices. Use geometric mean when averaging growth rates (e.g. investment returns of 10%, 20%, −5% over three years). Use weighted average for grades, ratings or any calculation where some values count for more than others.
