GPA on the 4.0 scale
The standard 4.0 scale assigns A = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B− = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, C− = 1.7, D+ = 1.3, D = 1.0, F = 0.0. GPA = (Σ grade × credits) ÷ Σ credits. Credits are usually credit hours (US) or course units.
2
Weighted vs unweighted
Weighted scales (4.5 or 5.0) award extra points for harder courses — typically Honours, AP or IB classes. A weighted scale lets a top student in difficult courses score above 4.0. Most US universities recalculate to an unweighted 4.0 scale when comparing applicants from different schools.
